Churchill Fellowship Award Welcomes Applicants from Multicultural Communities
Would you like to travel overseas for four to eight weeks to explore a topic or issue that you’re passionate about, and come back and share your knowledge? You are welcome to apply for a Churchill Fellowship.
A Churchill Fellowship is for any Australian Citizen or permanent resident of Australia over the age of 18 who would like to explore international best practice and innovation or learn new skills from other countries. You will need to demonstrate a benefit to our community in bringing back and applying your learnings.
Churchill Fellows have created some of the most well-known innovations, and include Questacon, the Playschool Theme song, Unit Pricing in Supermarkets, and Neighbourhood watch, just to name a few. The Churchill Trust was set up in 1965 after the death of Sir Winston Churchill, when the Australian public gave generously in what was one of the country’s largest ever door-knock appeals. Almost six decades ago, on 28 February 1965, the “Churchill Memorial Sunday” doorknock appeal was held across Australia.
Applicants are empowered to design their own projects and are expected to have researched, studied or worked through their topic or issue thoroughly in Australia before applying. A Churchill Fellowship is not an academic award, and no educational qualifications are needed to apply.
Open Letter to Daily Mail Australia Demanding Apology for and Removal of the Racially-Based Accusatory Article
7 March 2023
We are writing to express our deep concern about the article titled “Why authorities are alarmed by these pictures showing three Chinese men taking photos at an Australian military show” published on the Daily Mail Australia news website on 6th March 2023 (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11824139/Chinese-taking-photos-Australias-defence-aircraft-Avalon-arouse-suspicions.html). The reported suspicion against the three men solely based on their appearance/race without any factual evidence is grossly unfair, racist, and deeply offensive to all Australians with Chinese heritage.
This type of racially-based suspicion not only affects the victims but also causes profound discomfort and anxiety to Australians of Chinese and other Asian heritage. It is unfair, unreasonable and unacceptable to suspect anyone with a camera in a public event who looks Chinese/Asian as a spy. This kind of racist suspicion makes us feel so unsafe and uneasy.
It is outrageous that such racism still exists in a multicultural modern Australia that we have called home for generations. This kind of racist suspicion goes against universal human rights (https://www.un.org/en/observances/end-racism-day) and is an insult to all Australians who share the common Australian values of respect and equality.
We urge Daily Mail Australia to apologise to the Chinese-Australian community, to withdraw this offensive article or update it with factual evidence to support the suspicion raised against the three men, and to prevent from publishing this kind of unfounded and racist accusation in future. It is essential for responsible media outlets to promote a fair and unbiased representation of all people and communities in Australia, regardless of their race or ethnicity.

The 2023 COVID booster dose is available for everyone aged 18 and above from 20 February.
Getting your bivalent booster dose remains the best way to prevent severe illness or hospitalisation, especially in people over 65 and those at higher risk of severe illness.
You can have your booster dose if your last dose or COVID infection was 6 or more months ago.
•Most Victorians had their last COVID vaccination 6 months ago. Immunity wanes over time so your protection against the virus is low.
•Getting your booster dose is like recharging your phone when the battery is low. Recharge your immunity with a booster dose and protect yourself before winter.
2. When can I get a 2023 booster dose?
•Everyone aged 18 and over can get their 2023 booster dose 6 months after their previous dose or COVID-19 infection (whichever is later). Getting your bivalent booster dose remains the best way to prevent severe illness or hospitalisation, especially in people over 65 and those at higher risk of severe illness. Vaccines are available from 20 February and book your appointment now. Children aged between 5 and 17 years can also consider a 2023 booster dose if they have a:
•disability
•severely compromised immune system
•complex or multiple health conditions.
3. Can children under 5-years get their 2023 booster dose?
•ATAGI doesn’t recommend that children under 5 get a booster dose. Children between 6 months and 5 years at risk of severe illness are eligible for two doses.
Which vaccine is available as a booster dose?
•Bivalent vaccine is the preferred option for booster doses. Vaccine brands vary depending on your age. For booster doses:
•children aged between 5 and 11 years can receive the Pfizer vaccine

•adults aged 18 years and older can choose the Pfizer, Pfizer bivalent, Moderna bivalent, Novavax or AstraZeneca vaccine.
5. Where can I get vaccinated?

Joint Resolution of Multicultural Community Organisations in support of a First Nations Voice to Parliament referendum (https://www.multiculturalforvoice.org/):
In 2017, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples asked Australians to walk with them towards a better future.
Through the Uluru Statement from the Heart, they asked for constitutional recognition through a constitutionally guaranteed voice in their own affairs.
As leaders of diverse multicultural community organisations, we endorse the Uluru Statement and its call for a First Nations voice guaranteed by the Constitution.
This reform is modest, practical and fair.
We call on our political representatives to lead this referendum in the spirit of bipartisan and broad cooperation.
We commit our steadfast support, and urge all Australians to work together to ensure referendum success.
Let us co-operate across differences of politics and diversities of culture and faith, to heal our country and unify the nation.
Online Information Session: Understand and Support a First Nations Voice to Parliament Referendum
Leading Guest Speakers:
Dr Shireen Morris – Director of the Radical Centre Reform Lab and a Senior Lecturer at Macquarie University Law School.
Thomas Mayo – a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man and an advocate in the campaign for a constitutionally enshrined Voice – the key proposal in the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
Date and time: Thu., 16 March 2023, 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm AEDT
Are you ready for a referendum? This FREE online (ZOOM) information session is delivered in plain English for communities of culturally and linguistically diverse heritage, in order to help people catch up on the latest developments and prepare you to make well-informed decisions.
A research team at Monash University Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health is funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to conduct a study and help develop culturally informed treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Any first-generation immigrant from China aged between 18-65, with experience of stressful/adverse event (such as experiencing/witnessing car accident, natural disaster etc) is welcomed to participate. If you would like to participate in an online survey to help this study, please contact: larissa.qiu@monash.edu. Anyone who completes the survey will receive a gift card worth $25. Thank you for your support.
Past research has suggested that people from Asian countries might engage differently in the development and maintenance of PTSD. Understanding this difference has a significant impact on the development of treatments for victims from culturally diverse backgrounds. In particular, the study is hoping to look at whether east-Asian population have different emotional regulation and appraisal strategies concerning traumatic events.
