  • AACTA Seeking Unsung Stories from Chinese Australians

AACTA Seeking Unsung Stories from Chinese Australians

Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) is asking the 1.3 million Australians who identify as Chinese Australian to share a story from their life – it can be a funny, sad, heart-warming or a heartbreaking story – but one that speaks to the truth of their experience in Australia. They are looking for stories that can help change the hearts and minds of Australians, stories that create connection, remind us what we have in common, and create empathy and understanding between us all again.

They are asking participants to record themselves telling their story directly to camera, and for it to be under 10 minutes long. It can be recorded on Zoom, or a cameraphone, or ipad. The content is up to the particpants, whether it is a heart-warming family story or a powerful snapshot of reality. They want an honest, authentic account of their life – or a moment from it – that speaks to the truth of their experience as a Chinese Australian.

Once submitted, a selection of stories will be chosen by a diverse committee of prominent Australian writers, filmmakers, and cultural trailblazers. These storytellers will then be flown to Sydney for the 2023 Unsung Stories Gala event, where their stories will be presented in front of a live audience, and live streamed around Australia. A large collection of these stories will then be housed in the online public archives of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) for future generations to be able to view, making their story a vital and enduring part of Australian history.

Submissions close on 22nd January 2023 (Chinese New Year).

  • Stay Safe This Summer

    Stay Safe This Summer

When parks are overcrowded, if you try to fit in by parking on the roadside you could make it more dangerous for everyone.

Often coastal destinations within 1.5 hours of Melbourne will be full by 10am, so go early or have a backup plan if it is already busy when you arrive.

Do you know your limits when swimming? Swim safely at beaches, rivers and lakes by learning the conditions and your ability. If you just jump in without a plan, you could drown.

    Parks Victoria

    About the Project

After people leave hospital, they might be sent the Victorian Healthcare Experience (VHES) Survey. This survey is about how they experienced care in the hospital.  The survey results help health services (hospitals) understand what they are doing well, what they are not doing well and what needs to be improved to care for patients.

Even though the survey has been translated into 23 different languages, people who speak a language other than English are less likely to complete the survey than English speakers. This means that hospitals have less knowledge about what to do to improve their service for people from different cultures who speak a language other than English.

The purpose of the Engagement of culturally diverse populations in the Victorian Healthcare Experience Survey Project is find ways to increase participation in the VHES from people who speak a language other than English.

The Victorian Agency for Health Information (VAHI), who are part of the Victorian Department of Health, manage the VHES program.  VAHI have partnered with the Social Research Centre (SRC) to undertake this project.

Information about Participating in a Consultation
